Wow! They blew themselves out of the water!

The Boothbay Region Special Olympics Team traveled on April 26 to Colby College and competed with other athletes from around the state in the only Olympic size pool in Maine again this year for the state Special Olympics Swimming Competition. They have been working hard both dry land and pool training and amazed themselves, coaches and parents at their successes, yet again.

Mindy Stevens cut 11 seconds from her 25-meter freestyle time winning a silver medal. Donny Dunning stayed consistent with his 4th and 5th places working hard in a tough field of athletes. Anthony Angelico got a silver for his 50-meter freestyle cutting his time by 24 seconds. He was amazing and strong. Vincent Giles cut seven seconds from his already fast but with new speed for his 50-meter backstroke to bring home the silver. Joey Ranco won a silver for his first ever butterfly! Danny Miller won a gold cutting 15 seconds from his very fast backstroke as well. What a champ! Peter Brewster, practicing solo all season including upper arm strengthening from his shoveling job, won a gold for his 50-meter free. He cut 15 seconds from his best time as well. Valerie Giles won gold in the 50-meter free cutting eight seconds from her best time as did Ronda LeConte. Ronda cut nine seconds to bring home the gold. Not to be outdone, Grace Giles cut four seconds bringing home yet another gold.

The frosting on the cake was Boothbay’s both relay teams brought home the golds! Team 1 had athletes Joey, Ronda, Grace and Valerie while Team 2 had  Peter, Anthony, Danny and Vincent.

It was a championship year! Total 11 gold medals, eight silver, one bronze, two fourths, three fifths, one sixth and one seventh.

A huge thank you goes out to "All Saints By The Sea."
