A large group of youth baseball players is expected to parade from Boothbay Common to Coulombe Family Athletic Field on Back River Road for an opening ceremony of the baseball season on Saturday, May 11 beginning at 11 a.m. All are invited to attend.

The parade of players will be led by members of the Community Band. Once there, Tom Nickerson, who has been involved with youth baseball and improvements to ball fields for several years, will give an opening speech. Nickerson will also throw out the first pitch. The national anthem will be sung by Y Arts performer Imij Armstead.

Julia Peters, who along with Boothbay Town Manager Dan Bryer and Duane Goud of Wiscasset Recreation Department is organizing the event, said there will be a schedule of games by the various leagues following the ceremony. Members of the T-Ball, Rookies, Minor and Major leagues will take to the field during the day. Peters said about 80 kids have already signed up to play this season. Wiscasset Rec is in charge of registering players for the leagues. “We will have a couple of T-Ball games, take a break, then the rest of the games will be played,” said Peters.

The concession stand at the field will be open from 9 a.m. until 2 or 3 p.m., said Peters. Hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, grilled cheese sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, baked goods and more will be sold.

As reported earlier in the newspaper, Bryer said an equipment storage shed for the field was donated by Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club, American Legion Post 36 donated a 20-foot flagpole, the town’s public works crew built benches, and Boothbay Civic Association donated bleachers for the Little League and adjoining soccer and lacrosse fields.
